Last night during supper I listened to SACD disk seven from the Brautigam fortepiano Beethoven sonata set, containing in order sonatas #26 (Les Adieux), #27, and #29 (Hammerklavier).

I continue to enjoy this rendition. Some time ago I christened the Pathetique with a second title: "Indestructible". Of all the Beethoven sonatas, it seems the most adaptive to a wide range of interpretive choices. It sounds good on modern piano. It sounds good on fortepiano. It sounds good on clavichord. It sounds good with an ultra slow final movement as heard above. It sounds good with the first movement exposition repeat taken all the way to the beginning as favored by Andras Schiff and a few others. It can be a moving experience in the hands of a less than stellar pianist, as demonstrated by Sue Perkins' performance of the middle (slow) movement.

I too listened to that yesterday.

I'm currently listening to Mahler's 3rd by Abbado and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

I recall reading a while back some comments by Jackie Collins (sister of the more famous Joan) on why she didn't listen to classical music 'because it was depressing' - well she should try Beethoven and there are few more uplifting and positive works than the 7th symphony which I listened to today conducted by Harnoncourt.

A bit of fun with Lang Lang.

Lang Lang with three other musicians in 2014 Chinese New Year Gala

I don't know who the female vocalist is, but I don't know how she makes her voice quiver the way she does.
