Technical advice for a non-technical end?

If you want others to watch something you have in a file, say a GIF file
you won't generally be able to provide a link to it. But there are web sites
to where you can upload the file, they'll give you a link, and all you have
to do now is to provide the name of the link to the people by whom the file will be seen. What is the generic name for those sites? I think it includes the word "host".

If the question seems a little odd, I can add I'm looking for advice to
find a web site that allows uploading PDF files, but can't do it properly
if I lack some technical terms.

I suppose you'd call that a "file hosting site."

I use www.box.com... I think it is very well done. You can basically upload any file for sharing, previewing, downloading, etc.
