I like this list better, as well. The Beethoven 9th, first movement, and the Bruckner 9th may have a lot more in common than one might think.

Here are another commentator's "Best 5 Symphonies" in comparison to Mark Elder's choice. Glad to see that Bruckner gets a mention!:

I noticed that! The way in which the last three symphonies are discussed do not cover much of their actual influence on music but seem to be rather a preference of the author. I think the first two had a much more more profound effect on the world of music.

In taking a brief look at the article I can get excited about the Brilliant Edition of Haydn's works as I begin to explore his symphonic development. These do not surprise me, but I do think others could have been mentioned. Berlioz's own Symphonie Fantastique was ground breaking, but I'm not sure if it had as much influence as some of the others mentioned. Schubert's "Great" Symphony, had it been premiered earlier would have had a much more profound influence with that heavy brass orchestration.

Thanks, Philip, that provided some food for thought.

I think we have this one in the main forum? I'll deal with it a bit more there.

Moving on to a new topic, many people have asked : what came after Beethoven's "late quartets". Maybe this very short article/review gives a pointer.

Yes Sorrano, Bruckner's day is fast approaching. About bloody time, too!! Still, we must not be too smug about being in the vanguard, hey?

After having gone through the 1st movement of the same symphony I do find that I am lacking for proper words to describe the experience. The hyperbole I understand, somewhat, but you'd think this is the first time the reviewer heard the symphony! I do have a third performance I want to listen (1st movement) before moving on to the rest of the work and that is one by Haitink. (His 8th really got me hooked on Bruckner and so I've highly regarded his work in that area.)
