    Secrets of healthy old age

None of us are getting any younger, though personally at my age I've never been in better health: no smoking anymore, very little alcohol, a good diet (never been a problem for me) and going to the gym 3 times a week. Anyway, check out this article from The Guardian (no paywall, just click on the right buttons):

They say you can't outrun a bad diet, but I sure give it my best try!

I walk past a gym three times a week on my way to the pub. Does this count as healthy living?

Hi Chris. I don't think I thanked you for privately sorting out my logging in problem a few months back, so I thank you now. I was also stymied by the problem that affected others here with regards the gobbledegook appearance of the site in my web browsers. Thanks also for giving the solution to that particular issue. Regards, etc.

I've recently been told by my doctor that I am pretty good shape for my age. Blood pressure, normal limits, Cholesterol not too high , but needs monitoring.
I don't drink, and have never smoked in my life. don't over eat, but get good nutrition. Keep your body and mind active. The only thing I don't get is a goodnights sleep, I can never make it to the recommended 8 hours sleep. Not ever. Happy days, but I wouldn't fancy living till I'am 100 or over , if I don't have quality of life.

If it's a 20-minute walk, 3 times a week, then yes, that's considered quite beneficial. If your pub is just round the corner, then no. Hah!

That's all sounds quite good, Megan! Well, apart from not getting a good night's sleep, it seems your lifestyle is top-notch. I agree with you about living to extreme old age: only if a good quality of life can be maintained. Even though I'm in excellent health, the fact that I was a heavy smoker for far too many years means I won't make it to a 100, but I'm living my life to the full and when the Grim Reaper taps me on the shoulder I'll tell him: It's a fair cop, 'guv. Can we negotiate?

You're welcome, though really I must get this fixed properly!

I think the quote attributed to Lincoln is appropriate "it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years". Especially so for this site when we think of how many great composers died young and yet they gave us so much.

                    Hi Megan.

It's nice to find that you still post on this forum, and that you're in generally good health.

I find it interesting what you say about needing 8 hours' sleep. I've always thought this to be something of a myth - conveniently thought up because 8 is exactly one third of 24 (hours in a day). Of course, babies and the elderly sleep more, so maybe 8 is an average over an entire lifetime? For me, I've always averaged about 6 hours and have never met anyone who claimed to do better than 7.

Hi Chris. It works for me, in as much as I still have to click on the Beethoven image in the "gobbledegook" homepage, so if you can fix that, kudos to you. Do you think you could also fix whatever it is that shows correctly when typing foreign accents? When I want to use an e-acute or an e-grave and so on, it shows up on the forum as a question mark. Thanks in advance for your expert input.

Unfortunately, even clicking on the image will not fix it on newer setups - you have to manually delete the "s" form the "https" in those cases.

The problem with those other characters is down to the database. I tried to fix it before, but failed. But when I fix the security issue, I hope I can resolve the issue with the database as well.

Yes, to confirm it's the same for me - the only way I can view the forum as intended, is to manually delete that pesky 's' from the address.
