Christ on the Mount of Olives

Tonight, I had the opportunity to listen to a recording of the oratorio Christ on the Mount of Olives (played by the local classical radio station) in observation of Easter. Singers were Pick-Hieronimi, J. Anderson, and von Halem with Baudo conducting the Lyon National Orchestra and Chorus. The recording was, I felt, well done and I enjoyed this seldom-heard masterpiece immensly. Anyone familiar with this recording?

I have not heard that recording but just wanted to share that all week on our local classical radio station they've been playing songs for Easter mainly from (last night) Handel's Messiah. Although they have played some excerpts from B's Missa Solemnis.

I do not know this version by BAUDO... but I have a wonderful version on CD (L.v.BEETHOVEN,3 CD, Edited by CONCERTO ROYALE n° 206208-360). (Symphony n° 7, Christus am Ölbert and Die Ruinen von Athen).
It is a german production (Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Dir. Josf BLOSER).

The singers are really good, and it is rare. Except the children choir...

The recording I recommend of Christus.. is on Opus111 label by, I think, Das Neue Orchester. This is light years ahead of the others.

I have no real problem with ..er... choirboys. In Handel the use of these young lads creates a better effect than that achieved by buxom maids.

There is another version I have conducted by Ormandy that is quite common to find. The sound of this old recording is very good, but the overall treatment is rather superficial and not really in the oratorio spirit, so to speak. The version by Das Neue Orchester is altogether a more dynamic and serious sounding affair - all assisted by the use of authentic instruments, of course. The only minor grumbling point is that the opening section of the final chorus is somewhat underplayed. Would you dare to try out this CD for yourself Peter?

I have no problems with choirboys... till it is well sung ! And on he recording I mean it is not... I will hear the recording you mention. Thanks Rod.

Of course choirboys cannot compete with buxom maids when it comes to power in the voice, but their clarity and purity of tone produces a great effect for religious music. Sopranos should more often aim to emulate this purity of tone, like Emma Kirkby for example. You know I don't like hysterical screaming from the ladies! I reminds me of the my daughter's mother!!

Has Sir John Eliot Gardiner along with his AMAZING orchestra and chorus already recorded this oratorio?
I have the Mass in C, Ah Perfid!, Meerestille un Glückliche Färt, Concertos for piano 3 (with a piano form 1802!) and 4 with him and I love all of this recordings, this orhestra is the most precise I've ever seen!

I have recommended Gardiner's CD with the Mass in C myself. In fact the current piece on the 'Rare' page comes from my copy of this very disk! Surprisingly Gardiner has not released a version of Christus on CD, though I recall him performing it live many years ago. I was somewhat disappointed with Gardiner's treatment of the Beethoven Symphonies.

You are entirely right about the children's voices... and the soprani.
But not all the soprani have the voice of your DAUGHTER's mother !!!
