I've had the privilege of seeing him twice with the Orchestra National de France and on both occasions he was extraordinary, even with his Parkinson very visible. One concert was with Martin Helmchen, Beethoven's PC 1 and Bruckner S9, the other was a Romeo and Julia evening, with Tchaikovksy's Fantasy, Bernstein's West Side Story Suite and the fantastic Prokofiev suites. A great man in more than one way.
