According to Arbie Orenstein (Ravel: Man and Musician, New York, 1991), Ravel, who criticized Debussy sometimes, particularly regarding his orchestration, once said, "If I had the time, I would reorchestrate La mer." A rather bold remark, I'd say.

All too often we forget the work was for piano. I agree with you on that one, as well. The orchestrations are interesting, but we really need to hear it the way it was composed to get the full effect.Originally posted by Enrique View PostFor me, the best version is Mussorgsky's own.
