    Beethoven-Akademie 1808 - Vienna 2008!

On December 22 at the "Theater an der Wien" in Vienna the original programme from the same date 200 years ago featuring the premieres of the
5th/6th Symphonies and the Piano Concert No 4 will be repeated.

    The full programme is:
(apologies for not translating but it's fairly transparent!)

    Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien
    Bertrand de Bily
    Arnold Schoenberg Chor

    Oleg Maisenberg Klavier
    N.N. Sopran

It's one of the most extraordinary concerts in the history of classical music and simply to be there in the very place that it all happened will be a very special feeling indeed.

If anyone out there on the forum wants to be there too, well my advice is to get your ticket asap as this one will surely sell out very soon.

Hope to see some of you there!

This is a repeat of the concert that Bernard and I attended back in the summer of 2003 and we said at the time that it was an odd time to do it and that they should have waited for the true bicentenary - well amazingly they are putting it on again. I think they should turn off the central heating for authenticity! - when I was there it was in the middle of a heatwave. Unfortunately I shan't be going this time due to other commitments, but I'd urge everyone else to try and experience this wonderful event.

Will they turn off the heat, too? That would lend to the authenticity!

They will also have to make a mess of the Choral Fantasia!

So Bernard, where will you be staying here in Vienna? You should try out the Hotel Beethoven which is right across the street from the original entrance to the Theater an der Wien:

Well, I'm gonna try, Preston! It will be, after all, my birthday weekend, and this would be the perfect gift if all my family will club together...

Hi Hammerklavier - yes I wish I were going as well, but at least I have the consolation of having attended the event 5 years ago which you may like to read about on the main site.
