I must confess an aversion to "complete" sets of Beethoven's works. OK, I have the entire Norrington collection of the symphonies, but generally I prefer to 'pick and mix' my recordings when it comes to actual purchases.

I think this is the right approach but complete sets are of course invaluable for discovering unknown gems or even the main works for the first time - it is surprising just how much of Beethoven is rarely performed!
