The secret of Mozart’s genius unlocked

The secret of Mozart’s genius unlocked – has a teenager succeeded where generations of musicologists have failed?

US student Linus Chen-Plotkin has analysed music by four canonical composers looking for patterns. Turns out Mozart’s music moves in the least predictable way

I'm a little sceptical of that I'm afraid. I should have thought for example that the music of C.P.E.Bach would show even more unpredictability, but brilliant as he was, no one would claim he was a greater composer than his father. Likewise using the examples given in the article of Beethoven, Haydn and Schubert, I don't think this particular analysis demonstrates their inferiority to Mozart.

Yes, I agree with you. I am not at all against the sort of research this young man is doing, but it's a a bit of a stretch for the article to suggest that he has in fact unlocked the secret to Mozart's genius! Still, his research will no doubt contribute to musicology conferences that often promote new approaches to music analysis.
