    Favourite Beethoven Quartets

Just listened to Razumovsky Quartet Op.59 no,1 which is definitely a favourite or mine. Others are Op.18 no.1, the 'Harp' Quartet Op.74, Op.95 'Serioso', Op.127 and Op.130.

Op. 59 No. 1 and Op. 130 are also favorites of my mine. I would also add Op. 18 No. 4.

Though if we are counting the Grosse Fuge, that would top the list for sure - I never tire of this one. Someday I have to convince someone to play the piano four hands version with me.

Just to be (slightly) different, I will nominate Op.59, no.2 in E minor (with its 'music from the spheres' slow movement - can't remember who said that), The Serioso, Op.95 (more drama in its 20 minutes than a full-blown opera), and Op.131 in C sharp minor, which I believe Beethoven regarded as his greatest quartet ('I do not care much for the enquiry'), and in any event, as Schubert's dying wish, was played at his bedside only a few days before his passing.
