    What would you choose?

If you had to choose just one Beethoven work what would it be? Horrible and almost impossible decision I know! I think I would probably pick the 4th piano concerto.

I am leaning toward the Misa Solemnis. It certainly would not be an easy choice.

Before I even got to the end of Peter's question, I was saying to myself, Beethoven's piano concerto no. 4.. but then there are lots of other brilliant works.

I want to say Symphony No. 4, because it is my favorite work, but if I had to choose just one I'm not sure that one captures everything I love about Beethoven. Just one could mean one to listen to or one to both listen to and play, so that makes me think of a piano work, so that I could have some Beethoven to play as well as hear. So maybe the Hammerklavier sonata, because I will never master that one, and it would always hold new challenges for me.

But how could I give up the orchestral writing? A piano concerto would bring the best of both worlds, piano and orchestra, and I think I would pick the Piano Concerto No. 5 in that case.

But it's hard to not pick one of the symphonies. The most "Beethoven" of all of them would have to be No. 3 or No. 9, for me. Both are great works. I would have to pick No. 3, I think.

So, the "Hammerklavier", the "Emperor", or the "Eroica"...

I'll give it to the Symphony No. 3.

My choice would be his String Quartet Op. 130 with original Grosse Fuge as the finale.

You didn't tell us Peter what you opted for.
