    RE-
Notturno Op 54, No. 4 - Edvard Grieg ~ Leif Ove Andsnes

Many thanks for this recommendation Peter, which I listened to and I very much enjoyed, its a beautiful dreamy nocturnal piece and even a lovely dreamy summers day piece.

It is a lovely piece, and the Grieg Lyric pieces in general are very enjoyable. Here is a recording of it that I prefer, played by Leif Ove Andsnes on Grieg's piano at the comnposer's villa Troldhaugen.

Liszt's formidably difficult transcription of Wagner's Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde / Marc-Andre Hamelin

For pianists who can make it through the almost always present "formidably difficult" aspect of Liszt's transcriptions, there is a lot of beauty there. A mastery of the piano and a deep understanding of the music gives these transcriptions an identity of their own, and it is no surprise they have survived into the area where recording technology has made it so that no one "needs" piano transcriptions to hear a piece due to lack of access to an orchestra.

I've been listening to Haydn's Vera Constanza. For a long time I was unaware that he had even composed any operas, so this is a bit of a treat.

I love Haydn's operas! They are full of wonderful music, and it's well worth spending some time with them.

After having gone through The Seasons and The Creation, as well as the masses, I find I really enjoy his vocal and choral writing.

I never knew that Furtwangler was also a composer but thanks to this article I do now!

Yes I knew he was also a composer, but have never listened to his music before - this symphony, clearly a post Romantic work influenced by Richard Strauss and Bruckner.
