    Schubert's Unfinished Symphony

Was Schubert's 8th symphony ever finished as a kind of exercise?

Several attempts have been made. In 1927, Felix Weingartner offered a completion of the Scherzo as part of his own 6th symphony. Amongst others such as Frank Merrick, Brian Newbould has also attempted this as well as a completion of Schubert's 7th and 10th symphonies.

More recently, It has been completed by artificial intelligence.

Brian Newbould did a realization of the scherzo, based on sketch fragments. I have a set of the Schubert symphonies that include some extracts of Rosamunde, set up as a finale for the 8th. The CD notes indicate that there were no sketches for the finale and those of the scherzo were incomplete.
