    I thought Barry Cooper dealt with this some time ago by suggesting it was written for Therese Malfatti and that 'Elise' was merely a popular name to refer to a beloved.

        Perhaps I'll throw in may tuppence worth.
        I rather like to think that Beethoven wrote this piece for one of his female protege students. There now, I think that settles it.
