It is most likely there is no 'Elise' as such. The piece was written for Therese Malfatti. It has been assumed that 'Elise' was a mis-reading of B's hand written dedication to 'Therese', or the other theory is that 'Elise' was a kind of pet name for a loved one at the time and Beethoven was merely using it for Therese in this more abstract context.
