piano variations

I have been studying Beethovens' various piano variations quite extensively lately. Particularly Op 35 "Eroica" . My observation was its' similarity in harmonic outline to Variations on " Rule Britannia" WooO79 and Variations on "God Save The King" WooO78. I woke up in the middle of the night with my head full of Beethovens' various inventions and not being able to recall which variation went with what tune.
Does anyone out there have a comparative observation? I also note that Jan Swafford refers to the "Erocia" figure/phrase as the englische.
