Listening this evening to Bruckner's 5th Symphony, 1st movement (again). This time I am listening to Gunter Wand's performance, early it was Jochum's. So far my preference goes to the Jochum performance; it seems a bit more crisp and energetic than the Wand. The brass is a bit sharper, as well, in terms of the sound, but this might have more to do with the recording itself. I like the Wand version very much and will continue to listen to the other movements, comparing both versions.

The 1st and 2nd symphonies of Herold are available on Amazon with a couple of overtures (http://www.amazon.com/Herold-Overtur...00792&sr=301-4) so I picked up the first movement of the 1st symphony to check it out. I haven't had the time, yet, to do that but am looking forward to it. Thanks, again, Roehre, for your varied lists!

This morning was Beethoven's Symphony N0. 8. I felt the finale was quite fast, more so than what I was used to. Conductor was Karajan.

Which suggests the other recordings were too slow (sorry Preston!). Beethoven not only marks the finale Allegro Vivace but he also has it in two in a bar rather than four which is proof he wanted this movement to go!

Headmaster, you will need to explain your "two in a bar rather than four" for those who are perhaps less literate in notation. Maybe use the Opus 2 n° 1 as a back-up example?
